Display Energy Certificates

Display Energy Certificates

Which buildings require Display Energy Certificates?

The Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations 2007 bring into play the requirement for Display Energy Certificates (DECs) in public buildings by 1st October 2008. After this date display energy certificates must be prominently displayed in non-domestic public buildings that accommodate public authority staff or are frequently visited by the public with a floor space in excess of 1000 sq m.

Examples of public buildings would be central government buildings, NHS premises including hospitals and those buildings run by local authorities such as council premises, leisure centres, & community centres.

Display energy certificates (DECs) provide an operational rating for the building based on how effectively it is being managed. The rating is calculated by analysing the meter readings of all the energy actually used, which is then compared to a benchmark that represents the performance indicative of all buildings of this type.

Energy ratings stated on display energy certificates are similar to those stated on an energy performance certificate (EPC) in that they are graded from A (i.e. most efficient) to G (i.e. most inefficient) in a similar fashion to white goods.

Display energy certificates (DECs) are required on an annual basis where the previous 12 months fuel and energy usage will be assessed. An advisory report will accompany your certificate and will provide a series of recommendations that, if adopted will help your organisation save energy and money.
